REALITY CHECK - Solo show curator Liviana Dan March 4 – April 9, 2016 Exhibition opening: Friday, March 4, 6 p.m. Calina Contemporary Art Space 1-3 Mărășești Str., 300086 Timișoara, Romania www.calina.ro Regarding the “Reality Check” project, Aurora Kiraly chooses a single frequency of communication with the world. Language as art alternates with the homogeneous rhetoric of the modern system of information; between these plans there is a subtle transfer of substance. The domestic intimacy of writing, the formal elegance of photography and a special light are always telling a good story. There are layers of emotion and consulting reiterating our real life. Related to the long history of the abstract vanguard, Aurora Kiraly inevitably connects art to knowledge. The lines, which organize the work, are austere but serene. The conceptual dimension is associated with history, hope, trauma, memory, human relationships, the thoughts of a child, the garden, the last snow... There is a profound meaning which follows the language and real-life infusions and accepts experimental codes for different everyday needs. Aurora Király's activity has explored the domain of contemporary art from different perspectives. In the 90s and 2000 her projects approached the ability of photographs to record the everyday life by simultaneously combining the self-referential fragments with quotidian documentary aspects. Her color and black and white photographs focus on details which usually go unnoticed, on the settlement of some personal moments aiming to preserve these fragments, to understand them and reflect on one’s existence. Starting with 2007 she teaches at the Department of Photography and Dinamic Image of the National University of Arts, Bucharest, an experience which has made her re-evaluate her artistic activity and come back with new, mature and profound projects. Her current work emphasises the sources approached by the contemporary artists when selecting the topic and the way they connects to the context/recent history/the history of arts. She has exhibited her works at Calina Gallery - Timișoara; MNAC, Alert Studio, Victoria Art Center, Kalinderu Medialab, the International Centre of Contemporary Art, GAD Photo Gallery, Muzeul Colecțiilor - Bucharest, Sindan Cultural Centre - Cluj, l’espace En Cours - Paris, Paromlin Gallery - Zagreb, National Art Gallery - Sofia, Brukenthal Museum - Sibiu, Museum of Photography - Kecskemet, Palazzo Bricherasio - Torino, Galeria din cetate - Tg. Mureș, etc. Both in her artistic creation and in her projects she deals with as a cultural manager or curator, Aurora Király is preoccupied researching the contemporary artistic phenomenon and interested in contributing to a better knowledge and dissemination of the recent Romanian art history. |
After she completes her master’s degree in cultural management EcumeEst at Dijon (1998), she attends a series of internships in cultural management and curating activities at Akademie Schloss Solitude - Stuttgart, Manifesta2 Biennial - Luxembourg, at the Contemporary Art Museum, Belgrade, and in 1999 she becomes the assistant-curator in the Report project carried out by Judit Angel in the Romanian pavilion from Venice.
The limited institutional opportunities, which were available in the Romanian artistic scene at the beginning of the 2000s, stimulated her to get involved in the initiation of a structure to promote contemporary art. In 2001 she founded the New Gallery / Galeria Nouă – an exhibition space based on photography and projects entailing the new technology – which marked a major contribution in the context of Romanian art and not only. In the period between 2001 and 2008 she organised a series of lectures and conferences at the New Gallery where she invited well-known professionals from contemporary art field, such as: Christine Frisinghelli (Camera Austria), Roger M. Buergel (Artistic Director Documenta 12), Ricardo Bofil (architect) and curated more than 200 exhibitions with important artists such as: Elina Brotherus, Hélène Binet, Ola Pehrson, Biggert & Bergström, Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber, Federico Câmara, Krassimir Terziev, Ion Grigorescu, Teodor Graur, Gheorghe Rasovszky, Iosif Király, Călin Dan, Dan Mihălțianu, Alexandru Antik, Karen Kipphoff, Alexandra Croitoru, Irina Botea, Ioana Nemeș, Vlad Nancă, Matei Bejenaru, Alexandru Patatics, Jozsef Bartha and many more. After closing the exhibition program, in 2008, Aurora Király kept bringing off projects within the frames of the Galeria Nouă Association, whose director she still is. We mention just some of the outstanding projects she had coordinated: the bilingual book Fotografia în arta contemporană. Tendinte in România după 1989, (Photography in contemporary art. Tendencies in Romania after 1989) published in 2007 at UNARTE Publishing House, Mărturii XXI – Revizitînd trecutul, (Testimonies XXI – Revisiting the past) a collection of video interviews with Romanian artists, art critics and curators from various generations (between 2007 and 2012) which can be accessed online at www.galerianoua.tumblr.com, the project and publication CitiesMethodologies Bucharest in 2010-2011. Starting with 2012 she got involved in educational projects promoting contemporary art. *** “The Installation Projects” platform Initiated in the fall of 2015, “The Installation Projects” comprises a series of exhibitions curated by Liviana Dan at Calina Contemporary Art Space – a prominent non-profit space from Timișoara focused on contemporary art. “The Installation Projects” provides the contextual background and information related to a term approached in art practices involving the settlement and configuration of objects in space. The ensemble of objects and space is setting up the work of art. Sometimes endowed with a permanent yet usually ephemeral structure, the installation is rather a production and layout mode, not a movement or a style. It represents a subjective experience suggesting a certain persuasive power. The priority of the installation is highlighted by the reflexive identity of the work of art. The artists invited by curator Liviana Dan to present solo exhibitions in the context of “The Installation Projects” are: Iulia Toma, Vlad Nancă, Apparatus 22 and Aurora Király. |
