IDEAS COME & GO
2022 96 x 145 cm hand-stiched drawing with applications of tulle and silk on linen The work explores the creative process, the network of ideas and thoughts, and the notes and preparatory sketches that come together and overlap to clarify a project. The chosen materials emphasize the subtlety of this process, through the use of transparent materials, and stitch punctuation. |
Fragments of the architecture of the place were the triggers for the work. The outdoor lamp at the entrance of the villa, the swimming pool, the columns, and the pergola became the main characters I worked on during my residency at Villa Empain. |
The textile drawings I make have a more complex process. I often start from photographs or sketches, then work more on those and keep only the essential. I enlarge the sketch to 1:1 scale and then choose the materials - sometimes recycling fabrics with a history, cutting them out, and arranging them. When I get to the sewing stage, it means things are mostly in the right direction. The sewing process is meticulous and takes time, but it also has a meditative side. I use a type of stitching that takes into account that the back of the work can also be a drawing in itself, much more discreet and beautiful. |
